My
name is Malcolm Andrew Ripley and I am not an artist by education nor
profession, I just like to draw. I actually have a degree in
Electronics and my profession for the last 20 years has been
Information Technology, specifically Business Intelligence (databases,
data, reports, presentation etc).
I have always had a love of railways probably due to the fact that my
childhood bedroom view was Mirfield station and goods yard. A
huge beautiful central island glass roofed stone built station that was
pulled down. An act of vandalism, in my opinion. My primary
school was adjacent to the line and the passing steam engines could be
seen through the windows. Finally, just to make sure railways were in
my blood I discovered that my family history is full of locomotive
drivers!
In addition to railways I have this passion for investigating what we
have lost. I believe we have destroyed solid built architecture to be
replaced with modern rubbish in the rush to modernise without
appreciating what we already have.
So my appreciation of the architecture and railways we have lost drives
me to reproduce those scenes in my drawings. I like realism,
almost photographic, so that that "view" draws you in. I base my
drawings on real life, old photographs and drawings, of the relevant scenes and objects,
and then use my imagination to reproduce a new scene (some scenes are best left as I saw them like Sawmill Cottage).
The prints currently available are all my A4 drawings, I have a number of A3 drawings that will be available in the near future.
